The recollections of Berry Smith when he was held in the chains of slavery. Mr. Smith was 116 years at the time of this interview so his life included many years of being a slave. These recollections are housed in the Mississippi Slave Narratives, Voices From Our Enslaved Past.
"I am not in the mood to be distracted by watching sporting events any longer. I am only in the mood towards working for human justice, social and economic equality, and educational equity. Watching or focusing tunneled vision on sporting events simply doesn't deliver on these objectives. So, I'd rather read and build my collective thoughts and gain comprehensive knowledge that will address those issues and share those thoughts and knowledge with others."

Today, we read the recollections of Henri Necaise who spent over 30 years in slavery. After he was the freed from the bonds of enslavement his life didn't improve with freedom because this nation simply cut him loose without the means to build a better life for himself and his family.
Today's recollection comes from the Mississippi Slave Narratives, Ancestor Tom Wilson, 84 years old recounts the years he was held in bondage working for nothing other then the enrichment of his master.
This is another of my journeys through the Federal Writer's Project, Mississippi Slave Narratives. Today, I read the recollections taken on July 23, 1937, of Ancestor Gus Clark, who along with his wife Liza told of experiences being held in bondage in Louisana working the sugarcane fields.
