June 9, 1989 John Conyers, Late Congressman Announces A Plan For Reparations Commission
32 years ago today John Conyers, announced his intention to introduce a bill requesting a Commission to Study Reparations. That bill HR 3745 was eventually introduced on November 20, 1989 with a funding request of 8,000,000.00. Now, 32 years later though all the toil and turmoil Black Americans have suffered since 1619. There still is no acceptable platform agreeable to our legislative branch of government to study reparations. I mean a lousy 8 million dollars the cost considering our government wastes 1.67 billion dollars maintaining 77, 000 vacant or underutilized federal properties each year. I mean Black Enslaved Americans and the descendants built the wealth of this nation. Yet neither Houses of Congress could see allocating 8 million dollars in our tax dollars to simply study something that is a forgone conclusion. That this nation needs to study the history of oppression forced on Black Americans.
